For a while I have struggled to figure out what it is, why it's this way, and then as I was reading a random book about Catholicism it hit me. It's not entirely religious why the people are they way they are, although the togetherness of a congregation no matter the religious affiliation is always positive, it has to do the mentality of the people we have created. The country is suffering from Individualism.
I say individualism in not in the context that everyone should be their own person, think for themselves, pursue the things that make them happy. I am talking about the dark, greedy side of Individualism. The "What's In It For Me" individual.
Individualism has become the most dominant trend driving the decision making process. No community, town, city, state or nation can grow strong with this kind of attitude. Individualism always weakens the community and causes the whole to suffer from this cancer.
What is perpetuating this unhealthy direction are the political and social reforms of enhancing the assumed sense of entitlements. Through special interest groups, unions, lobbyists pressuring law makers have successfully raised the rights of the individual above the rights of the society as a whole. An example of this is the movement to remove "Under God" from the Pledge of Allegiance because one person found it offensive. Another is successful lawsuits against schools against Father-Daughter Dances because one mother found it offensive. No longer keeping score at kids baseball games because one loser kid cried he lost so the helicopter parents went after the system. The list goes on.
The rights of the indiviudal have been strengthened at all costs, with no regard for right and wrong, and often to the detriment of the whole. In addition the rights of the State and any authority have been reduced as well. All of this has been done under a banner of false freedom. The freedom that has been advertised is a that you can do whatever you want, whenever you want, whereever you want, without interference or consequence by another person or authority. This is not national freedom. This is not American freedom.
American society prides itself on the high premium it places on self-expression but it is relatively disinterested in creating "selves" that are worth expressing. Individualism's foundation is greed, selfishness, and exploitation. The country's up and coming generations are full of individualism thinking.
The needs of the many out weigh the needs of the few, or the one.
This has been another Joe movement.
